Timaru's Murray Cleverley was surprised when he was notified he was to become a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) in the Queen's Birthday Honours.
He attributes the accolade to the people he works with and his family.
"It's not about me, it's about my wife [Di] and children who have allowed me to do these things," he said.
Equal passions he has for business and community have been complementary, Cleverley said.
"I'm fortunate I have really good support around me. It should be an award for everyone I work with."
He has contributed to a broad range of organisations in South Canterbury and nationwide. He is the past chairman and a current board member of the Warbirds Over Wanaka Community Trust.
A member of the New Zealand Chambers of Commerce board from 2002 to 2009, he is a life member of the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce.
What many people may not know is that Cleverley established BIZnetworks New Zealand Ltd in partnership with Chambers of Commerce throughout the country and established Trust Aoraki in 2003 to manage local gaming machines.
The 100 per cent distribution of gaming funds has to date distributed more than $9 million back into the South Canterbury community.
Known for his high-profile role as chairman of the Canterbury and South Canterbury district health boards, he also facilitated the$3 million fundraising campaign for an MRI scanner.
Previous awards include two Vero Excellence in Business Support Awards (2006 and 2007) for a not-for-profit organisation and Associate Fellow of New Zealand Institute of Management in 2005.
