Waimate welcomed in winter by producing its first high pollution day on Sunday.
The town's air had an average concentration of 53 micrograms contamination over a 24-hour period.
A high pollution day is classified when over 50 micrograms of air particles are contaminated, averaged over a 24-hour period. Last year Waimate had six days with more than 50 micrograms of air pollution.
Environment Canterbury has a target for Waimate having high pollution no more than three times a year by 2016, and no more than once by 2020.
