Timaru has experienced twice as many high pollution days this winter than at the same time last year.
Wednesday was the fourth high pollution day in a row, with a 24-hour average concentration of 103 micrograms of suspended particulate per cubic metre of air.
It was also the highest level recorded this year.
Waimate had its second high reading for the year the same day, with 56mcg being recorded.
