NEW LIGHTS: Traffic lights are being installed at the intersection of Church St and Otipua Rd.

The Otipua Rd entrance to Centennial Park will be closed for the next couple of weeks as part of the redevelopment of the intersection with Church St.

Traffic from the intersection will still be able to enter the Scenic Reserve once traffic lights are installed at the intersection, but drivers there will be no exit there.

"It will be changed to one-way traffic and it will be entry only," Timaru District Council land transport manager Andrew Dixon said.

"We're building a cycleway and a footpath so it'll be one-way traffic. The intersection on Church St and the footpath and cycleway will be completed in July."

The roadway immediately inside the reserve will be realigned and straightened to provide safer access to the park.

Dixon said it would lead to more traffic at the bottom of Quarry Rd, but the trade-off would be better safety overall.

"The one-way on the Centennial Park zigzag allows the formation of a designated walkway and cycleway, making it much safer."
