Boats lead way with logo on board
New South Canterbury business, new South Canterbury logo.
Finlay Boats NZ Ltd is the first business displaying the new "Manufactured in South Canterbury" logo on its products, in this case newly manufactured aluminium pontoon boats.
The business, owned by Grant Finlayson, was started four months ago and applied to Aoraki Development, Business and Tourism (ADBT) to use the logo.
The logo is on display on the back of the new boats and Finlayson said the business will try to incorporate the logo on other documentation it releases.
Showing the logo raises awareness of the industry, in a "little place like South Canterbury".
Finlayson said the company has its own fabricators, and subcontractors from the region who are providing upholstery, electronics, carpet-laying, blasting, painting, sign-writing, interior design, woodworking and trailer manufacturing services.
Building the boats in South Canterbury is seen as an advantage due to its central location and relatively low overheads.
Finlayson, who has 20 years of navy experience, said the new business has taken him out of his comfort zone.
The company, which has two fulltime staff and two other workers, has one completed boat and two more in production.
Although they are manufactured in South Canterbury, it is anticipated most of the boats will go out of the region to the North Island, the West Coast, or be exported.
ADBT chief executive Wendy Smith was pleased with the response to the South Canterbury brand logo and the story that sits behind it.
