A visit from the Big Muffin Serious Band has inspired a serious muffin competition in Geraldine.

To coincide with the upcoming Geraldine Ukefest, the Cottage Pantry and the Geraldine Kindergarten are on the hunt for the best muffin recipe in the district.

The competition, which is open to all ages, asks entrants to be creative with their recipe.

Elaine Taylor at The Cottage Pantry said it doesn't matter if the recipes are sweet or savoury, traditional or modern.

She said marks will be awarded for originality, appearance, taste and texture

Five finalists will be chosen and asked to bring their baked muffins to The Cottage Pantry on July 8 for judging by the Geraldine Ukuphonium Orchestra and sponsors of the Ukefest.

Proceeds from the event will go towards Geraldine Kindergarten projects.

They, too, put their muffin skills to the test earlier in the week.

Geraldine home and kindergarten committee member Janene Adams said the kindy kids had a great time baking banana chocolate chip muffins.

"Elaine from the Cottage Pantry joined in the fun, helping out and urging the children to get their thinking caps on for creative gourmet flavours to bake at home for the competition."

She said the muffins were then enjoyed as part of a shared lunch to celebrate the kindergarten's ERO report which ranked the Geraldine District Free Kindergarten association in the top 20 per cent of early childhood providers in NZ.

The winning entry will feature in the Geraldine Kindergarten Cookbook 2015.
