Motorbike thefts spark plea from police
Waimate police are urging people to report thefts, no matter how minor they are.
Their plea comes following the theft of two red 2013 Honda XR125 motocross bikes from a cowshed in Waimate.
The bikes, valued at $4000 each, were stolen from a Tawai Ikawai Rd property within the past 10 days. They were stored in an unlocked shed.
Constable Paul Alden said while it was important to secure belongings, it was equally important to report thefts to police.
"It helps to build a picture because we didn't know there were things [being stolen] in the area."
If police knew it was happening they would have patrolled the area more frequently.
He said reporting such crimes also meant it was easier to return recovered items to their owners.
"No matter how minor it is, we want to know about it."
Alden said security lights and cameras were good deterrents.
Anyone with information relating to the theft of the two motocross bikes is asked to contact Waimate Police on 03 689 7272, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
