Timaru bus patronage has not increased greatly since the Metro service route changes were introduced 12 months ago, but Environment Canterbury is not concerned.

ECan transport officer (southern area) Tony Henderson said he was confident that when people realised how convenient and economical it was, the numbers would increase.

To encourage more use, ECan and Timaru District Council reviewed the bus routes in 2010.

After consultation, more direct routes were planned so passengers could travel more easily across town without having to come into the central business district first, he said.

The new routes were introduced in July 2013.

Henderson said: "The main feature was the introduction of the Timaru Link route which provides a two-way bus route linking the main destinations around the city and having three cross routes that intersect with it.

"After almost a year of operation, the new routes have resulted in many positive comments being received from passengers, with the Timaru Link now the most popular route."
