A front weakened quicker than MetService expected during the weekend, but snow was still down to low levels, leaving the hills at Fairlie looking like they had been dusted with icing sugar.

Today, cold air is expected, along with showers and more snow down to 200 metres.

MetService duty forecaster Frances Russell said there could also be showers with heavy rain and hail.

"It will be fairly cold overnight. The further inland and higher you get, the colder it gets," she said.

Temperatures overnight were likely to be minus three degrees Celsius, but on Wednesday and Thursday it could get up to 10C during the day in Timaru.

Though morning frosts and light winds were predicted for Thursday it was likely to be sunny for the first time all week, according to MetService.

Tomorrow there could be snow and sleet turning to rain.
