Factory project boost for town

Temuka accommodation is experiencing the flow-on effects from the expansion of the Fonterra mozzarella factory at Clandeboye.

More than 360 contractors and tradespeople have been working on the $73 million project this off-season, with the majority from local companies.

Accommodation sites are busier because of it.

Aalton Motel owner Ashleigh Timpany said a lot of contractors from the factory were staying there.

Winter was usually a slow season for the motel, but this year when the motel did have a vacancy it went quickly, she said.

Clare King, owner of the Phoenix Motel, was also finding it busy.

"We're pretty much booked up until the end of September."

Although The Royal Hotel was not completely booked out, it was still busy and expected to stay that way.

While the Temuka Holiday Park did not have contractors staying at this stage, new manager Lyn Vincent said it was just about booked out, with a lot of fruit pickers and some permanent guests.

The park was already fully booked out around Christmas, she said.
