Seldom used lane to close

After a community board standoff, Orari's Griffin Ln will be closed.

The 300m road runs between Muff Rd and SH1 and is estimated to be used by about 20 vehicles a day.

The request to close it came from adjoining landowner Roger Payne, who sought the permission of the other adjoining landowners.

Because the lane is on the boundary between two wards, the application is being considered by the Temuka and Geraldine community boards. In 2009 the same request was declined.

This time the Temuka board voted for it to be closed and the Geraldine board voted for it to remain open.

At the Timaru District Council meeting on Tuesday, Cr Dave Jack suggested all that was needed was an arm wrestle between Temuka Cr Pat Mulvey and Geraldine Cr Kerry Stevens.

The council voted to close the road, with Cr Wills and Cr Stevens opposed.

Thirty-eight parties were contacted about the proposal. Nine replies were received and all opposed the closure.

The NZTA had signalled support for the close. Public access by foot would still be permitted.
