Timaru grandmother Liz Forbes is bemused by the theft of $4 worth of bread from her Essex St freezer.

Forbes and grand-daughter Taylah, 10, arrived home on Tuesday evening to find four loaves of bread they had put in their garage freezer the day missing.

It was odd that the discounted bread had been taken, ''especially when her [Taylah's] brand new bike's here, and camping and water-blasting stuff", she said.

Neighbours believed thieves were operating in the Marchwiel area. One neighbour narrowly avoided losing a chainsaw when the offenders were disturbed in the act, she said.

Forbes had no idea exactly when the bread was taken.
