Fine, with a chance of heavy showers, is the forecast for Timaru today.
Metservice meteorologist Liz Walsh said to expect showers later on this afternoon with a front change.
There are currently severe weather warnings in other parts of the South Island, but South Canterbury was at low risk from the gales affecting other parts of the country.
''Fronts are on the way up the South Island which might give a glancing glow to South Canterbury.''
Tomorrow was looking much colder and wetter heading into the afternoon; however, it depended on the wind direction, Walsh said.
A southwesterly would bring showers, where as a little more to the west, it would be cloudier, she said.
There is a weekend ridge forecast, with any showers clearing and becoming fine. Although, South Canterbury would have a wintry feel with any hills higher than 300m covered in snow, Walsh said.
