The snow that fell at Lake Tekapo on Monday night will stay for most of the week.

It may even be added to with the prospect of more snow inland today.

MetService meteorologist Nicole Ranger said Timaru will be fine and frosty today and tomorrow, although a southerly change is expected this afternoon.

Timaru had not reached its forecast high of 10 degrees Celsius by noon today. The temperature is expected to fall to -3C tonight.

The change is forecast to bring snow down to 300 metres

Tomorrow will see a mix of fine spells and showers, with a cold south-westerly all day.

Mt Dobson is expecting 35 centimetres of snowfall, with the weather being fine at first and snow showers spreading north late morning and afternoon, then clearing this evening.

The maximum temperature for Mt Dobson is expected to be -5C and the minimum temperature is expected to be -11C today.

Long fine spells and a few snow showers, mainly about the foothills are expected in Mt Dobson, Roundhill and Ohau tomorrow.

"Friday will improve and the cold wind will die out," Ranger said.

"It will be fine for most of the day and a maximum of 14C is expected."

Saturday will bring light winds and a maximum of 13C.
