THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY: Alan Ottley is philosophical after ewes and lambs were attacked on his orchard by a dog, with only the ewes surviving, but left bloodied.

Temuka police have found and shot a dog that attacked and killed sheep at a local orchard yesterday.

The incident took place on Cloverleaf Orchard, on North St, Temuka, yesterday morning. . Senior Constable J A McIlraith said the dog ran away, but was later found.

"The dog was located later in the orchard and shot. The owner was notified and Dog Control were present."

Alan Ottley, the owner of Cloverleaf Orchard, said it was the first time they had had trouble with dogs. "We have a small mob of sheep at the orchard, and yesterday I was coming out of the sheds and saw a dog chasing a ewe along the fence line."

His father investigated the incident and saw two bloodied ewes and four dead lambs.

"It was a violent dog attack. However, it was fortunate that we found the animal at the beginning, otherwise it could have been a lot worse."
