A Temuka man claims his petition protesting the state of the Opihi River has reached 5000 signatures.
Neville Stone said he had been collecting signatures for a petition requesting action to clean up the Opihi River and planned to present it to the minister for the environment after the general election on September 20.
Stone believes chemical contaminants which he said were secretly dumped under the Opuha Dam were to blame for the river's degraded state, and the river would be too polluted for future generations to fish in.
An analysis of sediment, fish and water samples gathered by the Cawthron Institute for ECan in 2011 concluded that the samples did not support claims of new sources of pesticides in Lake Opuha.
