ECan sets contract for new bus fares

Environment Canterbury hopes its new electronic ticketing system will make things easier for bus users.
The system will allow Metrocard holders to top up their accounts either online, by eftpos, or at a machine at the bus exchange.
ECan public transport spokeswoman Carole Evans said the changes would also be easier for drivers and were another step towards cashless buses.
She said it would also provide more reliable data on card use, including an ability to report passenger transactions by stop, in real time, which was important for good timetabling and route planning.
"We look forward to providing an even better service to existing bus users and adding yet more reasons for new customers to leave their car at home," Mrs Evans said.
ECan awarded the contract for the new ticketing system to Innovations in Transportation (INIT), a German-based company specialising in intelligent transport solutions.
Operations director Ken Lawn said the contract was for $5.5 million over five years and was within Metro budget limits.
He said the change in system would not lead to a rise in ticket prices.
The system will be phased in over the next year in Timaru and Christchurch.
