Around New Zealand, provinces have begun an information campaign in the lead-up to White Ribbon Day next Wednesday.
Yesterday, white ribbons, the symbol of uniting against violence toward women, were given out at Timaru's Strathallan Corner.
November 25 is recognised by the United Nations as the international day for the Elimination of Violence towards Women.
In the 2008-09 financial year, New Zealand police officers attended more than 73,000 cases of family violence. In most women were the primary victims.
