Pipeline should ease flooding fears

Work on the Whales Creek stormwater project is continuing as a new pipeline between Sealy St and West End Park nears completion.
Contractors having been working with hi-tech drilling equipment at depths up to 9 metres to lay 400 metres of stormwater piping.
The $400,000 pipeline is part of a stormwater management process between the Waimataitai and Nile St catchments which should improve stormwater flow when the project is completed.
Timaru District Council utilities renewal technician Andrew Washington said the Whales Creek retention area would catch about 80 per cent of the Nile St flow when the pipeline was completed.
There had been ongoing issues with the Nile St catchment as pressure on the stormwater system during heavy rain created flooding on Wrights Ave, Sealy St and Selwyn St.
The New World development had contributed towards stormwater discharge, Mr Washington said.
"It came to economy of solution.
"It would have cost $1.5 million to upgrade the Nile St catchment."
The retention area would improve Timaru's stormwater capacity and could withstand a one-in-50-year flood.
