An intoxicated South Canterbury man indecently assaulted his stepdaughter while she lay beside him in bed listening to a phone call.

The 37-year-old man, whose name is suppressed, pleaded guilty to the charge of indecent assault when he appeared in the Timaru District Court yesterday before Judge Brian Callaghan.

The incident occurred on October 30 when the man had been drinking and was intoxicated.

He got home, removed his clothes and got into bed. A little while later he was speaking to his partner on the phone and his teenage stepdaughter came into the room to listen to the phone call.

He pulled the blankets over her so that she wouldn't get cold. She was clothed but lying beside his naked body.

The pair continued to talk after the phone call had finished, discussing masturbating and breast sizes. The man reached over and cupped the girls breast, then held his hand against her genitals, over the top of her clothes, and put her hand on his penis.

When spoken to by police he denied touching her genitals but admitted the other acts.

He said he was very intoxicated and was extremely remorseful for his actions.

Judge Callaghan convicted and remanded him on bail to February 3 for a report and sentence.
