Waimate school may close

The future of Waihaorunga School in Waimate is uncertain, after an announcement it is one of 10 that Education Minister Anne Tolley is considering closing.
Waihaorunga School has a roll of nine pupils and is a decile seven school. Mrs Tolley said most of the schools had either asked to close or their rolls were too small to be viable.
The affected schools are:
- Waihaorunga School, Waimate, decile seven, roll of nine.
- Manawahe School, Whakatane, decile six, roll of 12.
- Tokoroa East School, decile one, roll of 44.
- Otairi School, Hunterville, decile seven, roll of four.
- Te Kainga Whaiora Health Camp School, Gisborne, decile one, roll of none.
- Waimata Valley School, Gisborne, decile nine, roll of six.
- Aorangi School, Christchurch, decile three, roll of 87.
- Otepopo School, North Otago, decile seven, roll of nine.
- Waldronville School, Dunedin, decile nine, roll 18.
- Felix Donnelly College, South Auckland, decile one, roll 69.
