A Chinese tourist's confusion caused a two-car crash that wrote off both vehicles, but left the occupants unscathed, police say.

A group of Chinese had been returning from the Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park about 10am yesterday when the woman driver failed to give way at the State Highway 8 intersection, near Twizel.

"The local Twizel plumber was travelling north and, for some reason, [the tourist] pulled out in front of him and on the wrong side of the road," Senior Constable Les Andrews of Twizel said.

When he spoke to the tourist, she said she had been thinking about how to get to Oamaru, became confused about the direction and what side of the road she was meant to be on, and then forgot to wait for the oncoming car.

She received an infringement ticket for failing to give way.
