Visit Gary Baynes' sculpture at Caroline Bay at the right time and it could light up. The six-metre-high stainless steel construction comes with solar lights.

The Christchurch artist has been sculpting for 13 years, with metal being the preferred medium for the engineer.

His entry for this year's Heartland Sculpture Challenge, Winds of Change, features three long stainless steel cylinders, the tallest of which is 6.6 metres.

Solar lights are fitted to the three blue powder-coated tips.

The sculpture represents the wind and the mystery of the element.

"It is about where it has been and what it has seen."

Baynes admits he likes to work on large pieces, with previous works including an eight-metre wing and a seven-metre-high piece consisting of three large cubes.

Winners of the competition will be announced at the Art on the Bay event being held on Caroline Bay on Sunday. Public voting closes at noon with both the people's choice and judging panel's choice being announced at 2pm.
