Want to learn how to saw someone in half? Defy physics by making your cat levitate? Make your boss disappear?

The South Canterbury Society of Magicians is offering classes to those wanting to become the next Houdini or David Blaine, starting tonight.

The aim is to teach the basic skills to those interested in magic and promote the society, says Bill Watson, who became a member "a long, long time ago.

"It will be small stuff at the beginning such as rope tricks and the Chinese prayer vase. Students will be asked to bring cards on the second night.

While the classes will be fun, Mr Watson stresses the importance of practice.

"We don't want people performing badly because it spoils it for everyone else doing it. We want to try and avoid people giving away secrets.

Top hats are not mandatory but Mr Watson believes they are an important part of any magic show.

"The main thing is to look a wee bit different.

The South Canterbury Society of Magicians was established on June 17, 1932, and celebrated its 75th anniversary last year.

The course is open to everyone over the age of 14 and consists of five classes, with the first tonight.

And yes, students will learn how to saw someone in half.
