With Saturday's brilliant weather and a relaxed atmosphere at the South Canterbury Wine and Food Festival, organisers expect this year's event to raise about $20,000 for Hospice South Canterbury.

Hospice chief executive Alan Munro said the gate numbers were similar to last year.

"Last year we made $20,000," Mr Munro said. Organisers expected to make a similar amount this year.

Co-organiser Carol Angland said it was difficult to know exact attendance figures because children entered for free and were not counted.

However, she said numbers were comparable to last year.

Ms Angland said this year's event was held a week earlier than usual so that it did not coincide with next week's long weekend, when they would not have been able to secure headline act Avalanche City.

"It was a brilliant day. We were so lucky with the weather. I think there was a really great atmosphere."

Tickets to a Flavours of Waitaki event, an extra feature of the day, had been limited to about 120 and had sold out, she said.

Other activities, including a dress-up competition and children's poetry contest, had also been held, attracting some interesting costumes, including a group of Where's Wallies.

Ms Angland said she had received positive feedback from some of the out-of-town entertainers, including actor and singer Shane Cortese, and Auckland group Avalanche City.

A strong smokefree message was also promoted at the event. While not the first time Smokefree had been at the festival, Ms Angland said the message was one they probably promoted more this year.

"It is a hospice event and throughout New Zealand they are working hard to promote healthy living for wellbeing."
