Chinese Consul-General visits South Canterbury
The Chinese Consul-General will pay South Canterbury a visit today.
Jin Zhijian took over the Christchurch-based role in August last year.
Today's trip is another leg on Zhijian's tour of the South Island, a trip which included Dunedin and Invercargill last year.
Waimate District Council chief executive Bede Carran said the visit was a chance for Jin to familiarise himself with the area.
"My understanding is that the visit to the district is part of strengthening ties between China and the community in Waimate District," Carran said.
"As part of that, Consul-General Jin will meet with the mayor and council in the afternoon," he said.
Jin was also likely to visit Oceania Dairy's Glenavy plant, which was opened last year.
He would be accompanied by "two or three" other officials from the Christchurch consulate.
