More riders join vintage cycle tour
The Oamaru Penny Farthing and Vintage Cycle Tour will be a larger affair this year with 33 riders from North Otago and around the country joining in.
The tour will depart Oamaru on October 13 for Riverton, cycling via Tuatapere, Borland, Mossburn and into Kingston in time to catch the TSS Earnslaw's 100th anniversary crossing from Kingston to Queenstown. The group will then carry on to Arrowtown.
It was a large trek but would be great promotion for the Oamaru Victorian Heritage Celebrations and the town itself, organiser Wendy Simpson said.
"It's approximately 290km and we have 33 riders this year. Some of our riders are joining us from Auckland, Hamilton and Napier."
The group is fundraising to help reduce the costs for those participating, who are promoting cycling and the Oamaru Victorian Heritage Celebrations, she said. "We visit schools and interesting places along the way." The group will hold cake stalls, garage sales, firewood raffles and a quiz night at the North Star to raise funds.
