Ire over Vodafone coverage
Vodafone cellphone coverage in the Gleniti area is still limited 18 months after the issue was first raised, a frustrated customer says.
Vodafone told The Timaru Herald in January last year it would investigate issues with coverage in the area.
But Anna Truong, who now lives in Wellington but makes regular visits to family at their Murchison Dr home, said yesterday there were still issues.
"I've been using this service ... since I've had a cellphone, which has been about 10 years, and it's been like this the whole time.
"There's areas along Wai-iti Rd that can't get reception."
There was full reception on the Telecom network, she said.
In her frustration she did a Google search about cellphone coverage in Timaru and the previous article in Herald came up.
"I'm glad they acknowledged it [back then], but it seems nothing's happening.
"We pretty much can't use our cellphones."
In a statement yesterday, Vodafone said due to opposition from some local parties, Vodafone's proposed Mountain View Rd site did not go ahead back in 2002.
Spokesperson Emma Carter said there were no plans to start work on a site in Gleniti, although the location was on a longer-term list for possible future development. "It's really not possible to say when that might happen."
