Timaru's new CBay Aquatic Centre looks set to start opening its doors to the public from mid-July.

At this stage the contractors expect to hand over the complex to the Timaru District Council on June 30, although initially not all programmes will be available.

District services manager Ashley Harper said it would take at least a week for the architects to carry out a full inspection of the complex – checking everything from the water filtration equipment to paint finishes and the garden's irrigation system.

Staff training would continue throughout that period.

"It is what I had expected, but I had hoped it would have been sooner," Mr Harper said of the likely opening timetable.

He added he was "disappointed for the people" that the centre would not be open for the school holidays.

If the next three weeks go to schedule, then "probably learn-to-swim classes and potentially the gym" would start operating mid-July.

Century Pool would remain open until at least the end of the school holidays, when the situation would be reassessed.
