Police are calling for information after a 62-year-old man was mugged and knocked unconscious in Geraldine.
The man left the Village Inn about 9pm on Saturday and crossed the pedestrian bridge into an alleyway, where he was struck on the head.
The man's wallet and cellphone were taken.
They were found about 300 metres away on McKenzie St but $20 was missing.
The man required hospital treatment for the wound.
Detective Constable Hamish Caird, of the Timaru police, said police believed someone had been hiding in the bushes.
"He's [the offender] whacked him on the back of the head with something," he said.
The victim was struggling to recall what had happened.
"It was a pretty good knock to the back of the head.
"It could've easily been a lot worse."
Police wanted to hear from anyone in the area from about 9pm on Saturday who saw any suspicious activity.
