Vandals shatter glass in piazza lift
Someone shattered 17 panes of glass in the piazza elevator this month, causing an estimated $10,000 of damage and creating a hefty repair bill for ratepayers.
Police said the vandalism happened in the past few weeks. It appears the vandal, or vandals, stood on the railway line and threw stones at the glass panes.
The Timaru District Council is now in the process of getting quotes from glass companies to repair the damage, land transport manager Andrew Dixon said.
"We're extremely frustrated and disappointed. At the end of the day, it's the ratepayers who will pay for this damage."
The cost will be partly covered by insurance, but about $5000 will have to be paid out of council funds.
The piazza lift has been the target of vandals in the past, but nothing to the scale of this incident, Mr Dixon said.
Security cameras inside the lift and near its entrance did not capture footage of those responsible because of the distance they stood from the site, he said.
