More than 1000 brass band musicians are gearing up for the national Brass Band Contest

Oxford and Raymond streets residents have been treated to their own private street parade.
Members of the Nelson Youth Band were out early this morning putting in some final practise before tomorrow's street march on Stafford St.
The band, which was practising turning and stopping on Oxford and Raymond streets at 8.30am, traveled to Timaru with the Nelson City Brass Band, and were lead by top New Zealand brass band player Mike Ford.
More than 1000 musicians are expected in Timaru for the national Brass Band Contest, with 28 bands from across New Zealand. The contest starts tomorrow, with A and B grade performances at the Theatre Royal and C and D grade performances at the Mountainview High School auditorium.
The street parade will travel along Stafford St at 12.15pm tomorrow. The Band of the Year performance will be held on Sunday from 2pm at the Theatre Royal.
