A landmark Timaru building is undergoing a transformation and getting a new name.

Hilltop Dairy on Evans St will be known as Vip's Minimart from the end of this month. New owner Vipul Surti is no stranger about town.

Some might recognise him from the Church St Dairy or the mart on Grey Rd but he had his eye on the Evans St site for some time.

''This dairy was on my mind for quite a long time; big premises, good location and a busy spot.''

He approached the previous owner nearly 12 months ago who was reluctant to sell. The deal was sealed in May and the work started soon after.

New flooring, new hardware, new lighting, painting and structural alterations are being carried out. Mr Surti says the multi level brick building was constructed in 1949.

''We've worked hard to get it going; it's not just about buying a shop and opening up.''

Mr Surti was born in Gujarat in India and immigrated with his family in 2007.

At 29, he has a bachelor degree in software engineering, worked in London for three years as a recruitment consultant and was in charge of a $10 million portfolio in his previous role as a debt collection manager.

''When you're young you have dreams and when they're fulfilled you're happy,'' he says.''Pick a goal and work on it; create another goal and keep working on it.''
