Timaru has had its 28th high air pollution day this year.
Both Timaru and Waimate have had more air pollution days than at the same time last year.
Timaru recorded a concentration of 98 micrograms of suspended particulate per cubic metre of air on Friday, almost double the health guideline maximum of 50 micrograms.
The previous day, the 24-hour concentration was 61 micrograms at the Anzac Square monitoring site. Environment Canterbury records show Timaru recorded 23 high pollution days by the same time last year.
Waimate had its 10th high air pollution day on Saturday with a 24-hour average concentration of 52 micrograms. At the same time last year, Waimate had had six high pollution days.
