Win for watercolour newcomer
A Timaru artist relatively new to the watercolour scene has snapped up a major award in the genre.
Claire Forbes won the 2012 Edinburgh Realty Premier Art Award in Dunedin last week for her piece Summer Evening, Waipara.
Forbes said the win was a real surprise.
She was not originally going to attend the exhibition opening last Friday, but was strongly encouraged to by organisers.
The piece was inspired by a trip to Waipara with her husband, who was competing in a cycling event at the time.
"It was really the light that struck me about that painting. There was something small and inconsequential about it, I thought, but there was something about the light.
"And obviously the [judge] saw that too, so I was lucky."
It was one of four pieces she created from the trip.
She said she was just starting to get to grips with watercolours.
Originally from Nelson, Forbes said she came from an "arty" family. Her family moved to Timaru in 2005 and she became a member of the South Canterbury Arts Society.
Some of her works are on display at the York Street Gallery.
Forbes wins $3000 for the award. The Edinburgh Art Exhibition, featuring entries in the awards, will be on display at The Art Station in Dunedin until September 2.
