Peter Pan is well overdue after taking flight from the South Canterbury Drama League costume hire wardrobe two months ago.
The costume, along with Elmo and the Easter bunny, is on the league's missing list. As the weeks turn into months, hopes that they will be returned are fading.
Wardrobe convener Anne Russell said it was frustrating and she urged anybody who had overdue costumes to return them.
"It is quite upsetting to find these things going missing.
"It's just one or two that take advantage of the system."
She said some people give false phone numbers and addresses when they hire the garments, making it difficult to track down the costumes.
"A girl took out [the Peter Pan costume] and when I went round to the address, the woman [who answered the door] said she had never heard of her. Another one, the guy had moved [house].
"It's dishonest and it's thoughtless.
"I wish people would be a little bit more careful and a little bit more honest, and not think they are buying the costume for $20."
Members of the group had considered adding a bond to the hiring fee if the problem did not stop. However, that solution was one that Mrs Russell wanted to avoid because of the extra work it would create.
She encouraged anyone with an overdue costume to return it, no questions asked.
The costumes can be returned by pushing them through a slot in the side of the doorway of the drama league.
