Nominations for by-election open
Nominations for a by-election in the Timaru District Council's Geraldine ward open tomorrow.
The by-election follows the death of deputy-mayor and councillor Michael Oliver earlier this month. Mr Oliver had represented the ward since 2001 and was elected unopposed at the 2007 and 2010 elections. He was also a member of the Geraldine Community Board, having first been elected in 1991.
Nominations will close at noon on September 20, and if an election is required it will be held on November 9, according to electoral officer Mark Low. It will be a postal election.
Nomination papers will be available from the Timaru District Council office in Timaru and the Temuka and Geraldine service centres. They can also be downloaded from the council's website.
The council's agents running the election will prepare a new roll for the ward. As of yesterday the roll contained the names of 4061 voters. It was based on the roll used at the last election and alterations made since then. Voter details can be updated at online at elections.org.nz or at the electoral office in Timaru.
The ward boundary remains unchanged since the last triennial election in 2010.
