Aoraki Polytechnic tutor Steve LeCorre has been named New Zealand Culinarian of the Year.
The honour came as a surprise to Mr LeCorre who was given the accolade at the New Zealand Chefs Association Annual General Meeting in Auckland at the weekend.
The award is peer nominated and adjudicated. It recognizes a chef for their contribution to the culinary profession of New Zealand.
''It was a very nice surprise. Unexpected,'' Mr LeCorre said.
Food was a passion for him that bordered on on obsession.
''My wife would certainly say that.
''I actually just love food really.''
Steve has worked across the world, from five-star hotels in Bermuda to quality restaurants in London. He is the captain of the New Zealand culinary team which competes internationally.
