Rugby player assault arrest
A 19-year-old Christchurch man has been arrested following an assault in Timaru on an East Coast rugby player which left the victim with a broken jaw, missing teeth and prematurely ended his season.
The assault occurred outside Malbas Bar on Stafford St early on September 2. The player, East Coast first-five Ben Parkes, 23, was taken from Timaru to Christchurch Hospital.
Timaru CIB detective Greg Harrison said the defendant would appear in the Timaru District Court on Thursday October 4, facing a charge of wounding with intent.
"After speaking to people at the scene and viewing the footage from the bar's security camera and also council CCTV footage we have made an arrest."
East Coast coach Ngarimu Simpkins said at the time of the incident it was a season-ending injury, which he confirmed again yesterday.
East Coast had played South Canterbury before the assault.
"Ben has recovered well and was up-and-about at the weekend supporting his team from the sideline," Simpkins said.
