Mayor off to China forum
Timaru Mayor Janie Annear heads to China this week to attend an international mayors' forum on tourism.
Mrs Annear attended the same event with three other New Zealand mayors two years ago, and has been invited back to the five-day event in Zheng Zhou. At this stage she does not know whether any other New Zealanders will attend.
"It is being paid for by the Chinese Government. It is not being sponsored in any way by [the] council," Mrs Annear said.
Mrs Annear and her husband Paul leave tomorrow and will be away for 10 days, as they will also visit Beijing privately.
Mrs Annear said it was not clear whether she would be speaking at the forum. She was on a discussion panel two years ago. "It is a good opportunity to showcase your district."
Mrs Annear is taking photos of the district featuring Caroline Bay during the Roses on the Bay Day, as well as scenic shots of the district.
She was not asked to provide such material last time, and found her hosts had provided their own photo of the Timaru District - a photo of the Government Beehive.
"It is an opportunity to network with other mayors from around the world, talk about tourism issues, and learn from other areas."
