A limited statutory manager has been called into Omarama School at the request of the board of trustees.
Board chairman Andrew Sutherland would not elaborate on why the request was made, but said the decision had been made to "move the school forward" and bring it into "a positive fashion".
A Ministry of Education spokesman declined to comment yesterday, but said information would be available on Monday.
The school has a roll of 29. A new principal started at the beginning of term two.
The Education Review Office said in its latest report that the board faced "significant challenges in developing an appropriate governance and management framework to support teachers and staff at the school".
It noted that since the 2009 review there had been changes to staff and board membership.
