Thunder strikes the high country
Metservice issued, then lifted, severe thunderstorm warnings for the South Canterbury high country yesterday afternoon.
Power was knocked out for a short period in several areas.
At 4.30pm, MetService weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near Albury, moving towards the southeast, however the warning was lifted at 5.20pm.
Alpine Energy confirmed power had been knocked out to Albury, Lake Tekapo, Fairlie and Cannington for 15 minutes just before 5pm.
Chief executive Andrew Tombs said the outage was on the Transpower transmission line and electricity was restored to Alpine Energy customers when Transpower's service was restored.
The thunderstorms had been expected to be accompanied by very heavy rain and hail. The weather is predicted to clear today with south-westerly winds dying away.
