A test of brains has seen a team of Temuka Primary School pupils blitz the pack when it comes to the news.
Year 6 pupils Alex Uden, Scott Wright and Jessica Marshall squared off against 35 primary schools in the district at a social studies quiz last week and came in third equal.
It is the best result for the school since 2005 when they won the competition.
The teams were quizzed on topics including newspapers, New Zealand knowledge and world knowledge. They finished first in the newspaper quiz with a perfect score.
Scott said the quiz was "difficult and scary".
"I thought we were coming last in the first few rounds; it was a pleasant surprise when we were placed third."
Co-ordinating teacher Robyn Will was pleased with the result.
"We haven't had a winning team since 2005. I think our kids had great general knowledge.
"They were the type of children who read papers and watched the news; that makes a difference."
