New toilets on the way, says community board
Twizel's old toilets, along with the old promotions association building, will soon be bulldozed to make way for new toilets.
Community board chairman Peter Bell said they were working on the plans for the new toilets.
Currently, the town's public toilets are located in the old promotions association building.
"It's been on the agenda for some time. We're now in a position where we can do something, as all the organisations that were using the nearby building have since found new homes," he said.
Mr Bell said the Twizel Promotions and Development Association had taken over the running of the events centre, while the real estate firm in the nearby premises was also setting up a new establishment near the marketplace.
"The old building is not in good condition. We hope to get a plan drawn up soon, and once that's done, I'd like to see the new toilets built within the next six months."
However, Mr Bell was confident the new modern toilets would be welcomed. "They're still going to be located in the marketplace area, hopefully we won't have too much disruption," he said.
The issue of Twizel's public toilets has proved vexing in the past. Two years ago, the council was forced to quash plans to move them after receiving more than 40 submissions against the idea.
