New Zealand's best colour is right hair
'I'm still coming to grips with it'MATTHEW LITTLEWOOD
A Timaru hairdresser has shown her true colours in winning a big national award.
Esther Luscombe of Hi-Jinks For Hair was part of a team of four from the South Canterbury-North Otago region who competed in the National Hairdressing Competition in Auckland during the weekend. The 25-year-old took out the award for best colour.
"I'm still coming to grips with it, I barely got any sleep over the weekend," Ms Luscombe said.
"I knew I could be in with a chance, as my design was quite different from the other finalists, but it was still pretty surprising."
Ms Luscombe said she spent several weeks planning the "tartan" design, while it took more than eight hours to put it together with model Tivoli Boland.
"There was a lot of freehand layering required with the design, and we had to get the colours and the design just right."
This is the first time Ms Luscombe has won the colour section at the nationals, and she beat a field of more than 15 finalists.
"I've been with Hi-Jinks for just over four years now. Before that, I'd done some study in fashion and design as well as a course in Christchurch," she said.
"It all started a few years' back, when my own hairdresser went on holiday and I had to style my own hair. People commented on how good my work was."
But Ms Luscombe said it was the competitive aspects of the job that appealed to her the most. "I love entering the competitions, it's why you get into this job. It's worth all the long hours."
