West cops worst of bad weather
South Canterbury will escape the worst of the weather threatening parts of New Zealand this long weekend, according to MetService.
High cloud and gusty northwesterlies are expected across the district today, followed by showers on Sunday and Monday, with possible light snow on the foothills.
However, the forecast does not look as promising for other parts of the country, particularly the west coast, MetService duty forecaster Larissa Marintchenko said.
"It's going to be [worse] on the west of the country."
She said the worst hit areas would have cold temperatures, rain and severe gales.
Rain started falling on the east coast of the North Island, Wellington, and parts of the South Island yesterday, with gale force winds through the Central Plateau upwards.
