A 30-year-old Waimate man was killed and a 23-year-old Waimate man injured when the motocross bikes they were riding apparently collided, police say.
The crash occurred on Sunday night in Coal Pit Rd, a shingle road near State Highway 83.
The wife of one rider and partner of the other went looking for the men and found them at the crash scene at about 9.30pm, police said.
The 30-year-old was found dead at the scene, while the 23-year-old was transported to Timaru Hospital with serious injuries. He remained in Timaru Hospital in stable condition as of 11am, according to a hospital spokesperson.
Police said both men had been wearing helmets. No other people were believed to be involved in the crash.
As of 11am, police had not yet spoken with the injured man. The investigation is ongoing.
