A Temuka man injured on Saturday night in an altercation outside the Crown Hotel has died at Christchurch Hospital.
Police have named the man as Dale Robert Bellaney, 39. He died shortly after 8am today.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled for tomorrow.
Detective Senior Sergeant Marion Neill said police are treating Mr Bellaney’s death as suspicious and have been busy conducting interviews and trying to establish the facts of what occurred.
"We're speaking to several people, and have spoken with people who have responded to media reports," she said. "The investigation team is working toward clarifying these events."
Investigators were also reviewing CCTV footage from the area.
Police were called to the premises at 8.50pm on Saturday. Another man and a woman were also injured in the incident and treated at the scene by ambulance staff.
The fight may have been related to a dispute between two groups of people that began earlier in the evening inside the Crown Hotel.
In connection with that incident, a 32-year old man was arrested for an assault on a 33-year-old man. He was scheduled to appear in the Timaru District Court today.
A number of vehicles were believed to have driven past the hotel around the time of the incident, Ms Neill said, and police would like to speak to those vehicles' occupants, who may have seen something.
However, investigators were not looking for a specific vehicle, she said.
