Three-year-old Peter (out fishing in the Twizel-Tekapo canal with dad David Rooney of Timaru) reeled in this fish earlier this year.

Looking for a fun family activity this weekend?

Take the youngsters fishing with a couple of sport celebrities. Saturday is Kids Gone Fishing day at Mt Cook Alpine Salmon on the Tekapo-Pukaki canal.

The event is held by local police in association with the Blue Light organisation.

"It's all about kids and parents having a bit of fun together," Sergeant Geoff McCrostie said.

Speed-skating star Nicole Begg and former All Black and current Crusaders hooker Corey Flynn are also expected to attend the event.

There was no need to sign up in advance, people could turn up on the day with their fishing gear and their lunch, Mr McCrostie said.

Competitive fishing is scheduled from 11am to 1pm. However, families could arrive earlier or stay later and make a day of it, Mr McCrostie said.

Event organisers will be at the site from about 10am. Standard Fish & Game licensing fees will apply.

Young anglers under the age of 16 can fish for free. For junior anglers, aged 16 and 17, the cost is $7 for a 24-hour licence. For those aged 18 and older, the cost of a 24-hour licence is $23.

Fishing guru Graeme Sinclair was initially to attend Saturday's event but was not able to do so for logistical reasons, Mr McCrostie said.

The sports stars stepped in to support the event. The event is also supported by the South Canterbury Anglers Club and Fish & Game.

There will be a range of prizes provided by sponsors.
