Saved by the bell

BELL SEARCH: The hunt for a bell to be used during the Alpine Energy Timaru Brass Band's performance of Lone Pine at Anzac Remembered on Remembrance Day had a happy ending.

Plenty of people gave Ken Osborne a bell yesterday.

The Timaru man's phone began ringing just before 9am with offers of large bells for Alpine Energy Timaru Brass Band's performance of Lone Pine in the Theatre Royal tomorrow.

Band conductor Dwayne Bloomfield had tasked Mr Osborne with finding a bell for the performance, and Mr Osborne turned to the Timaru Herald for help.

The response was far greater than he expected. "The phone started ringing about five to nine, and for the first hour I was pretty much just finishing writing down the message from one call, and the phone would go again. And then I had three calls later on this afternoon. I was pretty surprised. I thought we might get two or three at the most. I was amazed at how many people have got bells in their backyard."

Mr Osborne said he took about 10 calls, and had 15 bells to choose from. He accepted a Timaru woman's offer of a bell from the former All Saints Church in Evans St, and in return, she's received two free passes to tomorrow's Anzac Remembered concert.
